There are a number of challenges for the hackathon or you can choose your own idea.

British APCO, the main sponsor, has challenged BlueLightCamp participants take advantage of GPS to build an app that would provide critical information about location so as to add value to mission critical incidents. This could include managing volunteers who are involved in searching an area, providing the location of fire fighters in a forest fire, management of persons undertaking a community sentence, safety of health visitors undertaking home visits.

Look upon BlueLightCamp as a way to encounter professionals from the emergency services in a friendly non-work context. The people attending give up their time so they are really interested in finding better technologies and technology suppliers. Jobs Search Engine Adzuna expands into Brazil, South Africa, Australia and Canada

That’s why global tech and life science giants like Google, Facebook, Dell, Johnson & Johnson, IBM and Cisco operate on Irish soil. The conditions that have made Ireland an ideal location for multinational companies also make it a choice location for start-ups. I work for Enterprise-Ireland (EI) the main Irish government agency that works with start-ups that have the potential to grow in global markets. Part of EI’s remit is to attract high potential start-ups from IT, financial services, gaming and life sciences industries into Ireland and to help them build global businesses from there. We use our start-up fund to help companies relocate, offering up to €500,000 from a €10million fund. We also find other funding if it’s needed and help give start-ups a support network - all for just 10% of equity and no boardroom control.

But EI is more than cash – it’s also about direct help so the Irish government offers long-term guidance for entrepreneurial start-ups. We do this through giving start-ups advice on all the right local contacts, mentoring and training programmes and access to our Universities for R+D collaboration. Our Internet Growth Acceleration programme (iGAP) best reflects our approach – a six-month management development programme for start-ups specialising in internet/games markets.

One UK start-up given an EI leg up is Digit Game Studios. Its co-founders, Richard Barnwell and Martin Frain have both worked on big games titles at renowned companies and wanted to set-up their own business with a new cross-platform IP for hard-core social games. But Digit didn’t just want EI’s support, it wanted Ireland’s ecosystem because of the high skillset of local talent from the tech industry. Their transferable skills were a great complement to help up a digital savvy gaming industry. And Digit already wants to expand so with North America at its door and the influence of the big US tech giants in Ireland, they’re in a great position.

The ‘Start up in Ireland’ event will include Trend Micro’s Global Head of Operations, Anthony O’Mara who will talk about investing in start-ups and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry’s MD, Guy Walsingham on communication tips to help your business stand out. About the event

The RAPTOR Project aims to support digital SMEs and technology Start-Ups in the development of real-time smart urban applications on a secure platform. It is part of the Greenwich Peninsula's living lab, encompassing an Urban Operating System and Enterprise Centre to create new value chains from government, industry and start-ups to citizens.

RAPTOR is addressing the challenges associated with Start-Up involvement in open innovation by providing an open digital platform with a shared technical development environment to enable integration of applications and produce prototype commercial offerings in market sectors of retail, transport and the built environment.

SMEs across the UK are invited to participate in the project to create new apps, services and businesses built upon the source data and in response to specific challenges identified by partners in retail, transport and building systems. A Small Grants Programme is available to support the development of applications with up to £7,000 available as well as non-cash support from partners including:

Web Summit Comes to Manchester as Part of European Tech Crawl

Alibi, Manchester, 2nd July

The creators of the Dublin Web Summit and F.ounders are to host a ‘pub summit’ in Manchester on July 2nd in Alibi, Oxford Street, Manchester. The event is part of the European Tech Crawl which is holding networking events for techies, entrepreneurs, investors and the start-up communities of twenty two cities across Europe this June and July.

Attendees at the Manchester event include representatives from Techcelerate, The Next Web and Rentlord, as well as other start-ups, incubators, investors and entrepreneurs.

To date, the Tech Crawl has registered over 9,000 attendees for all events and their founder, Paddy Cosgrave, is hoping to attract over 10,000 by the tour’s end. The first event began on Monday 18 June in London with over 1,500 attendees filling three venues in Whitechapel, London.

The purpose of the events is to raise awareness of the Dublin Web Summit which will be held in October of this year. Mr Cosgrave plans for the Summit to be the biggest Tech event in Europe in 2012.

“At the Web Summit we’re looking for the next big thing, the next Ebay, the next Twitter, the next Facebook…” says Mr Cosgrave.

The Manchester Pub Summit will bring members of the tech, web and start-up communities together to network and give them a taste of what’s available to them at the Dublin Web Summit later on in the year.
