Opportunities in Healthcare Sector

9.45% of the 51,323 active companies in the health and social care sector are based in the North West, generating over £2 billion in revenues for the regional economy. NHS employs more than 1.7m people. Of those, just under half are clinically qualified, including 120,000 hospital doctors, 40,000 general practitioners (GPs), 400,000 nurses and 25,000 ambulance staff. When the NHS was launched in 1948 it had a budget of £437million (roughly £9billion at today’s value). In 2008/9 it received over 10 times that amount (more than £100billion).

Alan Edwards has an extensive general management background in the medical device industry. He was CEO of Credent Vascular Technologies Ltd formed after a successful £10 million Management BuyOut from Cardiotech International Inc. Credent was sold in 2003 and since then Alan has specialised in developing and growing early stage development companies. He is Chairman, Dialog Devices Ltd, a University of Loughborough Spin-out, Chairman at VivoMedica Plc and Chairman of Asep Healthcare Ltd an Imperial College spin-out. He is an advisor to MinuteBox www.minutebox.com, Scubacraft www.scubacraft.com and Carbonvine www.carbonvine.com

Invested in and been a director of early stage technology businesses for the past 12 years - as a founder director of Acceleris Corporate Ventures. Currently working as part of the High Tech High Growth initiative with James Crawford from Touchpoint Change, in addition to being the CEO of iCare Planning. Chartered Accountant by profession with additional qualifications in marketing/corporate finance. Raised £20m plus in private equity over last decade. In past worked at a senior level consulting with PwC. Also involved mentoring mature MBAs/entrepreneurs.

Joanne has over 10 years’ business development experience in early stage technology project and company development. Her background includes nine years in academia demonstrating her versatility in medical imaging, assay development, clinical and experimental physiology. Her industry background combines clinical nutrition development, technology transfer and business creation in life sciences in general with key skills in the funding of new start businesses. As business development manager with MerseyBIO, a biotechnology incubator organization based at the University of Liverpool, she was instrumental in the development, creation and funding of 6 University spin-outs.
